What is a Notary?

A notary public is a public official appointed by the state to certify the authenticity of signatures and copies of documents, to administer oaths and affirmations, and to perform other such acts as are allowed or required by law. This official serve the public as an impartial witness. Since notary publics are admistered by his/her state, the procedures and requirements for becoming a notary public is different in other states. What Identification is required for notarization?

Valid identification must be obtained from each person whose signature is to be notarized. Proper identification is necessary since legal consequences of an error are severe. The following examples are good forms of identification:

1. Personal acquaintance of the notary
2. Driver's license
3. Passport
4. Foreign passport that has been stamped (within the past five years) by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
5. Photo identification card issued (within the past five years) by a state or branch of the federal government.
6. Inmate ID Issued by the State Department of Corrections.

Unacceptable forms of Identification include:

• Matricula Consular Card
• Social Security Cards
• Temporary Driver's Licenses
• Driver's Licenses without photographs
